Healthy Cities Tutoring

Healthy Cities Tutoring is a tutor-mentor program that provides elementary and middle school children with one-on-one support from community volunteers. The overall goal of Healthy Cities Tutoring is to improve the academic performance, engagement in learning and self-esteem of children aged 5-14 who are enrolled in the program and assigned a tutor. Teachers refer children who could benefit from the support that one-on-one tutoring and mentoring can provide. We are working to serve more of the students on our waiting lists and reach more of the students who are struggling to find success in school and in life.

Volunteer Role

Volunteers provide one-on-one tutoring and mentoring for students in kindergarten through 8th grades. The tutoring is provided in all subjects, including reading, based on the needs of each child.

Students or People Served

Healthy Cities tutors work with children in kindergarten through 8th grades in 7 schools in San Carlos and 3 schools in Redwood City.

Volunteer Times

Tutors are assigned to students based on the schedules of the volunteers and the specific schedules and needs of each child. Tutoring takes place before school, during the school day and after school. There is also some weekend tutoring. The primary volunteer times are during the school day and after school.

Volunteer Commitment

Volunteers are asked to tutor for 45 minutes once a week and we ask for a commitment of one school year. Healthy Cities Tutoring offers training and orientation sessions in October, December, February, March and April, along with tutor workshops throughout the year. Training and workshops are optional but highly informative and recommended.

Volunteer Requirements

The minimum age is 14. We require live scan fingerprinting for all tutors age 18 and older. Redwood City schools also require proof of a negative TB test.
