New Study Says Reading Aloud is More Effective than Talking for Building Literacy

Several PLC partners rely on read-aloud techniques when working with struggling readers. An article appearing July 8 on EdSource summarizes recent scholarship, confirming the value of this approach. In his study, Dominic Massaro, professor emeritus of psychology at UC Santa Cruz, has found that books tend to use more sophisticated vocabulary and grammar than everyday speech, presenting a more challenging language experience than informal speech. Grammatical understanding and word mastery form the basis for learning to read.
