The PLC unites a broad range of local organizations working to achieve a common goal: ensuring that the children in our community become proficient readers by third grade. Our partners include school districts, literacy support providers, civic organizations, and many others. Individual volunteers are just as important in this effort.
The need is great
The Peninsula region is experiencing a time of great success and growth, yet 43% of children in San Mateo County are not reading proficiently by third grade. In the Redwood City School District, this figure is estimated at 50%.
and the stakes are high
Being able to read at grade level by third grade is one of the most important predictors for high school graduation and career success. Up to third grade, kids learn to read. After third grade, they read to learn.
but YOU can have an impact!
One on one support for struggling readers has proven to be an effective means of attaining reading proficiency. The number of kids in need is far greater than the number of volunteers currently working with our partner organizations. By volunteering to work with a struggling reader you can make a real and lasting difference in the life of a child. Studies show that just one hour a week of reading support can make significant gains in a child’s reading level.
